We are often asked what the various flatware is made of, in each pattern description, the metal content are listed.
Will the ring turn my finger green?
Your finger can turn green from sterling silver, silver plate, and other metals because of a chemical reaction between the metal and your skin. Copper is usually the reason; it reacts with the pH levels on your skin to create the green color where your skin and the metal meet.
Can real silver turn your finger green?
It is possible, Oxidation (that gives the jewelry an antique look) can cause silver to turn your finger green. It doesn't matter how high-end your jewelry is, many people can have a sensitivity to it. Even jewelry made of sterling silver or gold can produce discoloration for some people.
What you can do:
1. Keep your hands and ring dry! Lotion, soaps and water all can trigger the reaction.
2. Use Clear nail polish on the inside of the ring where it contacts your finger. (This will last usually a week or two before needing to reapply.)
3. Nail polish remover can be used to remove a green mark from your hands.
4. Keep your jewelry polished and clean.
If you practice good ring care and don't have sensitive skin or an allergy to copper or nickel alloy then the chances of a green finger are minimal.
Stainless steel, platinum, and rhodium-plated jewelry, which includes almost all white gold, are less likely to react to your skin.
